L. Brief
summary: The Hello, Goodbye Window, by Norton Juster is a wonderful book. It
starts with a small girl visiting her Nanna and Poppy’s house. She tells us
that the house has many windows and has a brick path, but the best window is
the Hello, Goodbye window. The little girl then proceeds to tell us of her day
and night with her grandparents. She talks about the stars and then she wakes
up to eat breakfast and play in the garden with her grandmother. She then takes a nap and awakes to look out
the window at all the visitors, a tyrannosaurus rex, the queen and many more.
As her day comes to an end at her Nanna and Poppy’s house the little girl
wishes she could have a hello, goodbye window in her house someday. She also
wants to be just like her nanna and married to a man just like her poppy.
M. Description
of how you would use the book with students: I believe I would use The Hello,
Goodbye Window by Norton Juster to talk to students about their houses and
family life. I could tie in the Hello, Goodbye Window as a focal point, asking
the children if they have a special place in their homes that is like the
Hello, Goodbye window.
